There are millions of "regular Americans", and many of them are interested in other cultures and pursue their interest in university educations. The question you raise about Spencer simply reflects a common trait of many people who have become anti-Islam in recent years: In years past (particularly pre-911) we were either disinterested in Islam, relatively ignorant of Islam, or -- as in Spencer's case and my case -- we had an interest or fascination in Islam as this exotic "Oriental" culture that had peculiar beliefs, and some of their beliefs strangely coincided with early Christian heresies (for example, the Islamic belief that Jesus was not really crucified, but only seemed to be as an optical illusion created by Allah -- a strange idea that even more strangely coincides with a prevalent early heresy called "Docetism" whose followers started centuries before Mohammed was even born, but whose ideas persisted and probably got as far as the Arabian peninsula by the time of Mohammed).

Spencer simply had a parallel interest in Islam and also spent time studying it at the time. And I already presented in my previous comment a cogent argument explaining such an interest by a "regular American".

Check U. S. crime rates. Washington D. C. has both the most restrictive handgun laws and the highest crime rates. Vermont has the lowest crime rates and the least restrictive gun laws of any state. You need to be an adult, nonfelon, and a state citizen. You do not need any kind of permit.
